DIY Dishwasher Soap

This is a recipe that is revisited,
my original blog post is here.
In my last post the recipe says to use white vinegar
for a rinse aid during the rinse cycle,
but I would often forget and my dishes would
come out cloudy. Plus I found
my dishes to have a
slight undesirable vinegar smell. :(
I find this updated recipe to work much better,
my dishes come out sparkly clean
and smelling fresh like lemons.

Homemade Dishwasher Soap
2 cups Borax
2 cups Washing Soda
2 Packets of Sugar Free Lemonade Kool-Aid
½ cup of Citric Acid
A few Drops of Lemon Essential Oil
Mix all ingredients together and store in a container.
To use: Place 1 Tablespoon in the main wash compartment.

    1. Hello Krystina,
It smells awesome, plus under my kitchen sink smells super good because the container that I store the dishwasher soap in is not air tight. Great Perk!

  7. Hi! This looks like a recipe I would like to try. I am curious though, what benefit does the kool-aid add?
    Thanks, Kris

    1. The Kool-Aid adds a fresh lemonade scent, and adds shine to your dishes. ;o)

  9. I tried it and got the cloudy glassware. I put the lemon rinse recommended but it still was cloudy. I love the laundry detergent but not too thrilled with the dishwashing powder.

    1. Try add another package of Kool-Aid to clear up the glassware. White vinegar works great as a rinse agent, to shine on the glasses. Simply pour it in during the rinse cycle or add to the rinse compartment. ;o)

  10. Love the recipe! but I too need to know what the Kool-Aid is for. We can't buy Kool-Aid in our stores in Australia, so I'd have to buy online. I do have lemon oil :-)

    1. The Kool-Aid smell super good and keep your dishes shiny because it contains citric acid. Feel free to skip the Kool-Aid and use a bit more citric acid. Thanks for stopping by. ;o)

  12. i was going to ask the same where can i find citric acid? and do you have to use borax? i've read that alot of European countries have banned it do to possible side effects. have you heard anything about that and what are your thoughts on that? i've kinda wishy washy i mean how long did our ancestors use borax? so i was just wondering what other green cleaner people thot. i'm definitely trying it, as really even with the expensive brand AND jetdry i have cloudy dishes i think its because our water company does nothing to soften our water and its extremely hard and lots of calcium.
any thots and opinions would be greatly appreciated!

    1. Oh, I am so sorry. Try using a additional package of Kool-Aid. That should do the trick, and eliminate the cloudiness.

    1. It works great but depending on how hard your water is you may have to add more citric acid and kool aid. ;o)

    1. Arm & Hammer makes baking soda and washing soda either product would be suitable to use in the recipe. Thanks for stopping by my blog. Smiles, Paula
